Description

Hippolyte Jean Blanc, 1880. 4-storey, 4-bay Scottish 17th century style tenement, forming part of terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; string course above 1st floor; cornice above 2nd floor; crowstepped gables to outer bays; chamfered reveals.

W ENTRANCE elevation: central roll-moulded doorway; panelled door; plate glass fanlight; blank heraldic shield set in square surround between 2nd and 3rd floors above. Single windows at ground and 3rd floors to bays flanking doorway; bipartite windows at 1st and 2nd floors; pedimented dormerheads to 3rd floor windows. Plate glass sash and case windows (regrettably reglazed). Grey slate roof; rendered and coped wallhead stack; rendered and coped mutual stacks; crowstepped gable adjoining tenement to N.

INTERIORS: not seen 1991.

Low boundary wall to street.

Statement of Interest

Designed with Nos 23 and 25 Marchmont Road for the developers, Galloway and mackintosh. The Dean of Guild plans differ in a number of respects from the tenements as built.
