Description

Circa 1869. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan villa. Squared and snecked rubble sides and rear; ashlar E elevation. Base course; stone bracketed cornice; quoin strips; raised window surrounds (segmental-arched at 1st floor) with chamfered reveals.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central pilastered round-arched Venetian style ldoorpiece with eleaborately carved consoles supporting bracketed segmental-arched canopy, guilloche incised frieze; panelled door; plat eglass fanlight; single window with lugged surround above. Advanced corniced tripartite window at ground floor to outer left; single window with lugged surround above. Full-height canted window with dividing cornice to outer right.

S ELEVATION: single windows at ground and 1st floors.

Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof; lead flashing; dormer to N; small-pane box dormer linking SE stack to roof; 4 shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks (2 to S rendered); moulded octagonal cans; skylight to S.

INTERIOR: not sen 1990.

Low boundary wall to street. Garage to S.

Statement of Interest

No 42 is in a similar style to its neighbours, 38-40 (Evens) and 44-50 (Evens) Lauder Road, interesting for their fine doorpieces.
