John MacLachlan, 1888; facade retained and enclosed by Basil Spence, Glover and Ferguson, 1976. 3-storey, 4-bay Italianate bank facade incorporated in modern 5-storey bank. Original facade of polished cream sandstone ashlar (stonecleaned); Corinthian columned ground floor with pedimented end porches; Corinthian aedicules at 1st floor; swagged frieze to cornice; balustraded parapet. Engulfed by unfortunate banded bronzed plate glass and ashlar curtain wall (original facade has glazing to suit), stepping back to 4th floor.
INTERIOR: modern bank.
MacLachlan was himself refronting an older building, but his facade is sadly now all that remains.
