Mainly 17th century, originally 2-storey and basement Z-plan 30' x 23' with SW round tower 20' dia and NE tower 17' square, turret stair at SE angle; E addition soon afterwards with E angle turrets; NW addition infilling re-entrant angle and making S and W front of approximately
equal length, entrance tower and small NE addition WH Playfair 1835. Further addition on E, Thomas Leadbetter 1891. Crowstepped gables and pedimented dormer windows, roll-moulded arched gateway. Some 19th century interior work of interest, murals by David Roberts.
Built by the Adamsons. Later belonged to John Strachan. Home of Lord Jeffrey 1815-50. The Leadbetter alterations were for Robert Croall.
