Description

Early 18th century. Lectern-shaped multi-facetted sundial sited in S part of walled garden on replacement stone cylindrical shaft and base constructed of 2 circular mill stones. Dials on various carved hollows and on star-shaped face at apex, combined in approximate lectern form. 2 gnomons formed from noses of masques. 1 lead gnomon.

Statement of Interest

The Newliston sundial closely resembles those described and illustrated by MacGibbon and Ross at Woodhouselee, Ruchlaw and Neidpath. Its original shaft was probably octagonal as the latter two. For further information see listing of Newliston House. The walled garden is listed separately.
