Description

James Simpson 1885, 2-storey, 5-bay symmetrical house with slightly advanced centre 3 bays and 2 wings projecting SW. Droved ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings to front; coursed squared rubble to sides and rear. Base course, eaves cornice and blocking course. Raised quoins to centre bays.

NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Entrance door at centre bay: panelled with 2-pane rectangular fanlight; architraved doorway with consoled cornice and blocking course above, extending over 2 flanking 4-light mullioned rectangular projecting windows. 3 regular central openings at 1st floor. Bipartite windows to outer bays, round-headed at ground floor, framed by Italianate timber surrounds comprising 3 colonnette mullions and blind oculus above.

SW, NW AND SE ELEVATIONS: not seen (1995).

4-pane timber sash and case windows to 3 central 1st floor openings. Plate glass timber sash and case windows to remaining windows. Grey slate piended roof. Droved ashlar 7-flue chimney-stacks with cornice. Louvred ventilation shaft over N wing. Cast-iron downpipes.

INTERIOR: not seen (1995).

BOUNDARY WALL: rendered dwarf wall with ashlar coping to street; modern railings.

Statement of Interest

Plans, dated 1885, by James Simpson for house to be built on site of Hawkfield House for David Paterson esq. N wing not shown on these plans, but appears to be contemporary. Former Victoria Industrial School.
