Description

Mid 19th century, with later additions. Single storey, Jacobean detailed, gabled gate lodge. Squared sandstone. Base course; finials to gables.

NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced gabled entrance porch to outer left; timber door; square plaque to gablehead; flanking finials to skew bases, gablehead finial; single window to re-entrant angle to right; advanced blank elevation to left; single window to re-entrant angle to right; bipartite window to gabled bay; shield to gablehead; bipartite window to outer right.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: timber gate to outer left, leading to later extension. Single window to bay to left; advanced gable to right; stone-roofed canted bay; plaque to gablehead.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; crowstepped gabled bay to right with window off-centre to left of ground floor, plaque to gablehead, modern additions adjoining to left.

NW ELEVATION: not seen 1999.

Variety of glazing patterns to timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; kneelers to skews (NE elevation), crowstepped skews (SW elevation); diagonally shafted stacks; polygonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

GATEPIERS, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: square-plan, chamfered gatepiers; low boundary wing walls; decorative iron screens. Rubble and brick wall encloses remainder of site. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Interest

Gate lodge to Cambusdoon House (demolished 1976), built in 1853 for James Baird Auchmeddan. Similar in design and detailing to Belleisle's South Lodge on Doonfoot Road (see separate list description).
