Description

J & R S Ingram, Kilmarnock, 1903. 2-storey sandstone Scots Renaissance house on a U Plan.

ENTRANCE FRONT: Asymmetrical with advanced 2 bay gabled wing at left with prominent mansard roof terminating in railed platform with flagpole. Wing has at ground rectangular bay with tripartite, cornice and blocking course. At first two windows in single pedimented architrave. Flemish crowsteps and token castellated and corbelled bartizans at base of skews. In centre 2 bay section with projecting single-storey porch. Porch has tripartite in front, door in right side, approached by balustraded scale and platt stair. Wallhead castellated, with corner bartizans and central 'pedimented' feature. At first floor pair of windows. Wallhead treated as porch. On right gabled bay as on left but only slightly advanced, tripartite on ground, bipartite on first, both with pedimented architraves. End bay of 2-storey block has bipartite on ground and single window above. To right single storey wing with central crowstepped bay with tripartite, flanked by single bays.

GARDEN FRONT: to left of entrance front. From left, bay with single windows on both floors, gabled bay, slightly advanced, with bipartites on both floors, both with pedimented architraves, then three bay section with projecting rectangular bay at ground on left, french window at right leading to balustraded terrace. At first bipartites left and centre, single window above french window. Facade terminates in advanced gabled bay with tripartite at ground, bipartite at first, (both with pedimented architraves), and gable-head chimney stacks. Battered base course. Slate roofs with terracotta ridge tiles.

INTERIOR: largely original, including panelled hall with balustraded scale and platt stair to first floor. Corinthian pillars and pilasters of varnished timber at ground and white painted columns at first. Billiard Room with wood panelling, some panels carved with drops. Elaborate plaster ceiling, marble fireplace with wooden overmantle.

Statement of Interest

An unusually late example of its type. B Group with Ladykirk Lodge (See separate listing - Ayr Parish).
