R D Robinson, consulting engineer of G H Hill and Sons,
dated 1955. Effectively designed, filter station with
simple classical details, nestled into man-made banks
abutting 3 side and rear elevations. Cream sandstone
ashlar with paving stone coping.
N ELEVATION: symmetrical wide advanced centre with large
keystoned doorway at centre with deeply moulded
surround; 2-leaf panelled doors. 2 openings on E
return, single door only on W return. Narrow recessed
outer bays with doorways (detailed as main door) filling
bays. Swept curtain walls advanced from outer corners,
suggesting imposing quadrants, with banks of earth to
outer sides.
INTERIOR: lined with glazed tiles, with red tiled floor;
timber screen with horizontal glazing by filter room with
droved, translucent glazing. Trabeated glazed ceiling
with glazing detailed as above. Original machinery
replaced, but spacious, light interior unimpaired.
BOUNDARY WALLS AND PIERS: rubble coped rubble pink
sandstone boundary walls and drum piers.
Striking, masterly design for industrial building, in
rural setting. Filter station for Whiteadder Reservoir to S,
currently supplying Torness.
