Early 18th century with many later alterations. Long 2-storey
house (originally 2) in terraced pair with Ystrad House.
Harled and painted rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings,
chamfered arrises.
W ELEVATION: asymmetrical. Piend-roofed full-height stairwell
added at early date, projecting off-centre to right with
small stair window and ball finials at angles; decorative
pheasant weathervane; low door by re-entrant angle on S return.
Windows flanking stairwell to left by re-entrant angle, with
further window blocked from former door at ground to left;
windows to both floors in outer bays. 12-pane glazing pattern, predominantly in sash and case windows. Coped stone end
stack and wallhead stack at rear. Ashlar coped skews. Grey
slates to pitched roof.
RETAINING WALLS AND PIERS: rubble coped rubble garden walls
to S, adjoined to house, with quadrants and pyramidally
coped rubble piers. Rigg wall to E.
Allegedly built to serve as factor's/yeoman's houses for the
Yester estate, and contemporary with James Smith's work on
the mansion. Windows have been enlarged and stacks renewed.
Ystrad House to N reflects more closely the probable original
form of the semi-detached pair, each with 2 doorways.
