Mid to later 18th century, 2-storey and attic, classically detailed house almost doubled in size in early 19th century by addition at rear; modern addition to L-plan single storey service block. Rubble, painted ashlar dressings and white painted harling.
W ELEVATION: 5-bay, symmetrical. Corniced doorway at centre with keystone and rounded corners to lintel. decorative fanlight. Window to each flanking bay at ground and to each bay at 1st floor, under eaves; rusticated quoins. 2 20th century gabled bipartite dormers.
E ELEVATION: later addition with irregular openings, shouldered wallheadstack and lean-to service buildings at right angles to left.
S ELEVATION: French door inserted to right of original house with 1st floor window above; later block slightly recessed, with window and modern conservatory at ground, 1st floor bipartite and attic window at centre. SERVICE BLOCK: piend roofed with swept slate-hung dormers and later alterations. 12-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows. Ashlar coped skews and moulded coping and dressings to end stacks. Grey slates. RETAINING WALLS, QUADRANTS AND GATEPIERS: rubble retaining walls with semi-circular coping; 2 sets of quadrants in same materials and square, coped gatepiers in squared rubble. Simple wrought-iron gates.
Archibald Broun of Johnstounburn, allegedly spent so much on the latter mansion in the mid 19th century, that he lived the remainder of his life at Chesterhill.
