Description

Circa 1800 large U-plan house substantially re-designed and
extended in Arts and Crafts manner probably between 1905-10,
and with NW ballroom and rear service range enclosing inner
court of 1912 by W. L. Carruthers, probably also responsible
for design of earlier alterations. 2 and 3 storeys; harled
with tooled ashlar dressings. East entrance front;
asymmetrical with deep bowed projecting 2-storey and attic
porch with round-headed keystoned door-way with Gibbsian
detailing and double leaf plank door.
South front; wide symmetrical 3-storey, 7-bay front with
additional angled bay at W with 3 centre bays flanked by
advanced square single bay towers with ogee roofs and with
outer gabled bays. Hexagonal plaque with coat of arms over
centre garden entrance.
Long rectangular 8-bay ballroom (1912) at NW; angle drum
tower with conical roof regular transomed and mullioned
fenestration. N service range (1912); round-headed centre
archway with long and short detailing; mainly casement
windows; multi-pane glazing with some intersecting Gothic
detailing in upper lights; crowstopped gables; apex finials;
corniced stacks; slate roofs.
Interior; entrance lobby leads to large S facing panelled
stair hall with chimney piece each end. Drawing room with
Adamesque chimney piece, paired Ionic columns supporting
ceiling and inglenook with chimneypiece decorated with
Dutch tiles. 1912 ante-hall connects ballroom with stairhall
with fielded panelled dado and pair niches flanked by Ionic
pilasters; panelled ballroom with high timber braced ceiling
and baronial chimneypiece with monogram and coats of arms.
Gallery at S and W; bookshelves fitted along S wall.

Statement of Interest

Ballroom added by Co. ldfield whose monogram is carved on

ballroom chimney-piece. Re-set 1663 datestone in library.
