Description

Early 19th century. Ice house set in earthen mound with arcaded grotto ante-chamber. Random rubble with rufa and pebble rockwork, rising in gable with arcade; tall round-headed arch flanked by 2 narrower arches, pebble surrounds, tufa columns and bases. Benches inside grotto. Wooden door to ice chamber with large iron hinges. Pedestal surmounting mound.

Statement of Interest

Curling house has similar rustic tufa rockwork as does a Grotto in the garden of Aberlady Manse listed separately. The shell grotto at Newhailes was designed earlier, with similar effect. A-group with other Gosford Estate buildings; see notes for Gosford House.
