1870-80. Pair single storey and attic, 2-bay cottages with
long elevation to High Street. Mixed rubble, tooled ashlar
dressings. Entrance to No 17 High Street at rear and to No 7
East Street masked by substantial modern flat roofed sun porch.
2 bracketted corniced windows to each house on High Street front
and in E gable of No 17 High Street; 2 gabled attic windows and
single 1st floor window in each gable above continuous cill/eaves
band. Lying-pane glazing. Coped ridge stack; slate roof with
projecting eaves.
With Nos 9, 11, 13, 15 East Street, these cottages were built
as estate dwellings for Gordon Castle employees. The design
probably dates from circa 1840, was used over a period of
time on the estate and was somewhat old-fashioned by 1870-80.
This group of cottages does not appear on the 1st edition OS,
1870.
