Description

1870-80. Pair S facing (to Westmorland Street) single storey
and attic, 2-bay cottages. Mixed rubble, tooled ashlar
dressings. Entrances at rear (for No 15 via Westmorland
Street). 2 bracketted corniced windows to each house in W
elevation with similar blind and single windows in each
return gable; 2 dormer windows break wallhead, single gable
1st floor window to each house above continuous cill-eaves
band; lying pane glazing. Coped centre ridge stack; slate
roof.

Statement of Interest

With No 17 High Street and Nos 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 East Street,

these cottages were built as estate dwellings for Gordon

Castle employees. The design probably dates from circa 1840,

was used over a period of time on the estate and was somewhat old-fashioned by 1870-80. This group of cottages does not

appear on the 1st edition OS, 1870.
