Terrace house, now flats. c1790-1793 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Palmer.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement, Welsh slate double pile parapeted mansard roof, double Romans to rear, with coped party wall to left with ashlar stack to front, rendered stack capped off to rear. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement. Three-window range. First floor has three two/two-horned sashes in splayed reveals with wrought iron balconettes. Second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills with wrought iron balconettes. Ground floor has two two/two sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills to left, to right six-panel door with reeded, fielded and single glazed panel in pedimented doorcase with Doric pilasters. One step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with splayed lintels with continuous stone sill, C20 door under crossover partly infilled with ashlar. Limestone area steps with wrought iron handrail. Double dormer with plate glass sashes. Band course over ground floor, sill band to first floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation partially visible. Two storey ashlar extension, C19 windows.
INTERIOR: Inspected by Bath council 1986. Original fireplace and shelf with Pompeian scroll to edge.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached cast iron baluster railings and gate with shaped tops on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Great Bedford Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square; it was intended to continue to NE but never completed. Nos. 7-11 were destroyed by bombing 1942.
