House, now flats. Completed 1792 with C20 additions. By John Palmer, built by James Beale.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement, ashlar and render to rear, artificial slate parapeted mansard roof with catslide to rear wing, coped party wall and large ashlar stack to right.
PLAN: House on constricted site between angle of Park Street and rear of north range of St James's Square is double fronted single depth plan with wing containing staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, second floor has three similar windows, ground floor has two similar windows in splayed reveals, six-panel door to centre has alterations to lower part, two fielded and two glazed panels, with one concrete step in pedimented Doric doorcase, one step to pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper. Basement has two plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 area steps. One double and one single dormer with C20 windows. Band course over ground floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet continuous with No.16 St James's Square (qv). Rear elevation partially visible, C20 window to first half-landing, six/six-sash to second half-landing.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached railings to right with gate are cast of baluster form with shaped tops now cut down to front on limestone bases, to left wrought iron railings with cast arrow heads on limestone bases, C20 railings and gate attached giving access to crossover.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; lower part of Park Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square. Underlease to James Beale 23 May 1792 for 95 years from 24 June 1790.
