GV II

Canal lock. c1800, restored 1971. John Rennie, engineer. Brick-lined basin with top two courses in stone, to heavy rounded flush coping. Two pairs of timber gates, cast iron winch gear at upper end. At upper end lock walls are splayed out for approx 8m, and at lower end they continue to and through adjacent bridge (qv). The Kennet and Avon Canal opened throughout in 1810.
