Well-head with walls, steps and railings

GV II

Wellhead in arched recess with walls, steps and railings. Mid C19.
MATERIALS: Limestone rubble and ashlar dressings, cast iron railings.
EXTERIOR: High rubble wall with heavy sandstone coping and crowned by spearhead railings contains wide segmental arch with bold alternating voussoirs over recess approx 1m deep, to rear wall with central opening to vertical jambs to deep embrasure to water source. Across base to front, much overgrown at time of survey (June 1994), bed of cistern or trough. To left wall finishes to stopped end, and to right to tall square pier, then further walling running down to landing with three+seven wide steps rising to path returning to south-east, path extends approx 12m flanked by railings, stopped to gateway at upper end.
HISTORY: This may be the holy well from which street gains its modern name. Leland, in c1536, commented on the springs occurring at this `suburb¿ of the city.
