War Memorial, 1923 with additional inscription post-1945, sculpted by H Percy Jackson.
MATERIALS: Yorkshire sandstone.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: three stepped hexagonal base with tall plinth above, surmounted by a column, the shaft of which carries incised shields. The whole is topped by a stone urn. The total height of the monument is 5 metres.
Inscriptions: 17 First World War names are recorded on the plinth, along with the inscription TO THE/GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THE/ TOWNSHIP OF NORWOOD GREEN/ AND COLEY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AND IN GRATITUDE TO ALL WHO/ SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1918 NAMES OF THE FALLEN/ (NAMES)/ AND IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF/ THEIR COUNTRY/ 1939-1945.
HISTORY: There was an unveiling and dedication ceremony on 11th November 1923 by local dignitaries and clergy. The portion of the inscription referring to the Second World War was presumably added after 1945.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE
This war memorial, commemorating the fallen of two World Wars, takes the form of a slender column standing on a plinth and hexagonal base, with an inscription and list of names. War memorials always warrant serious consideration for designation, and this well-executed and well-proportioned example clearly meets the criteria.
