II

War Memorial,1920 with post-1945 addition, unknown architect and sponsor. York stone plain obelisk on three-tiered plinth, set in the garden of Rastrick Library. The leading face has an inscription: 'TO THE MEN OF/RASTRICK/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/IN THE SERVICE OF/THEIR COUNTRY/1914-1918/"REMEMBER THE LOVE OF/THEM WHO CAME NOT/HOMEFROM THE WAR"/AND IN HONOUR OF THOSE/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY/1939-1945'. The three other sides contain the names of the dead from the First World War (128 names). A small inscription near the base states that J W Clay left money for the maintenance of the memorial in his will. The dedication ceremony was performed in October 1920 by Lt Col Sir George Armitage CMG DSO and local clergy and dignitaries.

EVALUATION OF IMPORTANCE
War memorials attract considerable public interest and are always worthy of consideration. This well maintained and well executed example is simple but striking and evinces strong local ties with the names of the fallen from the First World War. The addition of the Second World War inscription adds to its historic interest.
