3/79 Stone built into west face
of wall to No. 15
II
Much weathered gritstone monolith, probably C10, built in to hammer-dressed
stone wall, bearing spiral motif incised into the stone. This extends down the
left hand side before running out to the left. This is reminiscent of a
Bishop's crozier and may mark an earlier ecclesiastical boundary. It is of
similar character to the cross-base in St. Matthew's Churchyard (q.v.) some 200
m to the north and may be contemporary with it. This would place it in the
C10.
