Pair of houses. Numbered right to left, described left to
right. early/mid C18 with probably C17 origins and later
alterations, including restorations of 1996 to No.16. Timber
frame with facades of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond,
stuccoed sills and eaves band; plain tile roof and central
rear brick stack with pots; cast-iron grilles.
PLAN: 2 rooms deep with stairwell between; front room is
narrower to make way for side passage. 2 storeys on
half-basement and with attics, 2 + 2 first-floor windows.
Ground and first floors have 6/6 sashes in near-flush frames
and with sills, those to first floor have flat arches of
gauged brick. Continuous 3-course band over first floor;
crowning modillion eaves band. Outer entrances,
6-raised-and-fielded-panel doors with 3-pane overlights,
continuous stepped frieze and cornice to ground floor, bowed
over windows. Grilles to half-basement.
Gable-ended attic dormers have casement windows. Rear: No.16
retains casement windows with leaded lights and external
latch, one with lozenge motif, all retaining some original
glass.
INTERIOR: No.16 has 2 raised-and-fielded-panel door to front
room. Dogleg taircase has splat balusters and plank door to
cellar; elm plank door to kitchen which has tall, wide
fireplace with plain surround with edge bead. First floor has
boxed beam, dado rail, 6-raised-and-fielded-panel door. Attic
has exposed purlins and rafters and, to front, a chamfered
axial beam; some exposed square panels of timber-framing with
later brick nogging.
Nos 2-16 (consecutive) Edgar Street (qqv) form a significant
group, together with Nos 28-34 (even) Sidbury; Nos 11 and 12
College Precincts; Tower House, No.1 Severn Street; and Edgar
Tower, College Green (qqv). Edgar Street (in which all the
buildings are listed) is a fine example of a Georgian street
and it forms part of the setting for the Cathedral (qv).
