South wing of cattle-shelter at Hainbury Farm
GV
II
Cattle shelter. Circa late C19. Coursed stone rear and end walls. Corrugated-iron clad roof with weatherboarded gable ends, concealing 'solid thatch' roof structure. Long 3-bay open-fronted shed with timber posts supporting closely-spaced pole joists, which carry coarse brushwood, horse bean haulm and straw, and thatched on top, now clad in corrugated-iron sheets. L-shaped on plan, but only south wing included because north wing has been converted into cow stalls and 'solid thatch' removed. This is a very rare example of a 'solid thatch' roof structure, a primitive form of roof construction that avoided the need for trusses. There are other local examples, at Church Farm, West Camel, and at Hamlyn's Farm, Long Load.
