The Manse

II

Manse. 1899. By J Middleton Shallcross for Presbyterian
Church, now United Reformed Church. Whitened roughcast on
brick with stone plinth, quoins, doorcase and dressings;
hipped roof of green slate with exposed rafter feet, extended
stay gutter supports and tall console cornice stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 8-window front arranged 4:1:3 and with
battered angle buttresses to front left corner. To right of
centre is doorcase with battered jambs rising into moulded
hood supported on integral console brackets: front door is
part glazed with leaded lights and has metal sheet covering
the lower part: overlight also has leaded glazing.
Windows are 4/4 sashes, those on ground floor paired or
grouped in flush quoined surrounds with hoodmoulds: on first
floor over moulded sill string which is returned at both ends.
Rear: single-storey square projection with flat roof. Above is
wide staircase window.
INTERIOR: inner front door is glazed and vertically panelled.
Entrance hall is separated from the rear hall by a heavy
timber screen which partly supports the open newel staircase
at the second step. Plain staircase with bullnosed step, slat
balusters and panelled spandrel.
Guest and service doors, separated by the hall screen, give
access to a large reception room at the rear and this and a
smaller adjoining room at the front have picture rails and
flat ogee ceiling cornices. Doors have unusual very narrow
panels over the door heads.
Doors throughout are of 3 vertical panels above lock rail, 3
below.
The landing window is leaded at ceiling level over the
external rear projection in clerestory form.
A very light interior with an interesting blend of traditional
and modern features.
