794-1/1/87 Backwood Hall
II
Small mansion. Mid C19, with later alterations. For the Glegg
family. Red brick in Flemish bond with slate roof. Jacobean
style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basement, 5 bays. Garden front
entrance up five steps to a patio with a further four steps up
to a pair of 4-panel bolection moulded oak doors under a plan
fanlight and flanked by pairs of Tuscan engaged columns which
are divided into three vertically by a classical Tuscan
entablature which supports a strapwork balustrade.
The entrance is in a late C19 single storey projecting porch
which contrasts with the character of the earlier facade. The
three centre bays are set forward so as to give the end bays
the appearance of pavilions.
Windows are sashes with single vertical glazing bars and stone
surrounds, moulded as architraves at ground floor level and
with flat projecting ogee moulded sills supported by knuckle
shaped corbels. Flat window hoods on consoles have strapwork
cresting to those which flank the door. First-floor windows
sit on a projecting sill band and have plain surrounds, eaved
to bays 2 and 4 only. The centre window is semicircular headed
and has massive consoles flanking the archivolt and strapwork
cresting to the hood. Windows in the first, centre and fifth
bays are under shaped gables with moulded kneelers and ball
finials.
The centre gable supports the arms of the Glegg family and is
flanked by a strapwork balustrade interspersed by piers with
ball finials.
At the rear a square tower with pyramidal roof and weather
vane rises to an extra storey. Windows are sashes, without
glazing bars, under wedge lintels. There is a 2-storey canted
bay facing north. The facade has stacks flanking the centre
bay projection and to gables of the wings. These have divided
flues above string courses and are re-linked by heavy
overhanging cornice caps.
INTERIOR: 4-panel and 6-panel doors. Pine dog-legged staircase
with turned balusters. The original entrance hall, now the
inner hall has oak panelling to plate rail level, a marble
mantle and leaded half-glazed doors at both ends. Ceiling
corniced based on rosettes and foliage.
