Pair of semi-detached villas with attached wall, pier and area
railings. 1839-40. By Abraham Tyler, builder who completed
many houses in Pittville. Stucco over brick with hipped slate
roof (mock slates to right) and renewed brick party-wall
stacks; iron verandahs, window boxes and area railings. Double
depth plan with outer side hallways and service ranges to
rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows. Stucco
detailing includes first-floor band surmounted by 3 Doric
pilasters between central windows. 6/6 sashes where original,
all in plain reveals and with sills. Venetian shutters and
S-latches to first floor. End entrances, flights of roll-edged
steps to 4-panel doors, the upper panels raised and fielded,
lower panels flush, with sidelights and divided overlights.
Roof has central raised and coped divide with kneeler. Returns
have 3 blind first-floor openings.
INTERIOR: noted as having retained original joinery including
panelled shutters to ground-floor windows.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: verandahs have x-and-circle motif to
uprights with openwork frieze, area railings to right have
X-motif balustrade. Window boxes to ground floor at left have
X-motif. Coped wall approx 2m high adjoins at right, ramped
down to pier.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes.
Nos 34-60 Prestbury Road (qqv) form a group of semi-detached
villas and are shown as laid out on Merrett's Map of 1834.
