Pair of semi-detached villas with attached area and dividing
railings and walls and piers to sides. 1839-41. By Abraham
Tyler, builder, who completed many houses in Pittville. Stucco
over brick with hipped slate roof and renewed brick party-wall
stack; iron verandahs, window boxes and railings.
EXTERIOR: stucco detailing includes first-floor band
surmounted by 3 Doric pilasters between centre windows. 6/6
sashes where original, taller to ground floor; all in plain
reveals and with sills. Basement has 6/6 sashes. End
entrances: flights of steps (roll-edged to left) to 5-panel
doors, that to right part-glazed, with sidelights and divided
overlights, all with margin-lights. Wide eaves. Roofs have
central coped divide and kneelers.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: tent-roofed verandahs have x-and-circle
motif to uprights, openwork frieze remains to right, X-motif
area railings throughout. Window boxes to ground floor have
X-motif. Arrowhead railings between houses. Walls approx 2m
high to sides ramped down to piers, that to left shared with
No.40 (qv).
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes. Nos 34-60 (even)
Prestbury Road (qqv) form a group of semi-detached villas.
