Pair of semi-detached villas with attached walls and piers and
area railings. 1839-40. By Abraham Tyler, builder, who
completed many of the houses in Pittville. Stucco over brick
with hipped roof, slate at right, mock slate at left and tall
stucco party-wall stack; iron verandahs and railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows. Stucco
detailing includes first-floor band surmounted by 3 Doric
pilasters between centre windows. 6/6 sashes where original,
taller to ground floor, all in plain reveals and with sills.
End entrances: flights of roll-edged steps to 4-panel doors,
the upper panels raised and fielded, lower panels flush, with
side-lights and divided overlights. Wide eaves.
INTERIOR: noted as having retained original joinery including
panelled shutters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: verandahs have x-and-circle motif to
uprights and openwork frieze, area railings have X-motif
balustrade. Coped walls with plank doors approx 2m high to
either side ramped downwards to piers, that to right shared
with No.42 (qv).
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area
undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout
being designed by the architect John Forbes. The villas on the
NW side of Prestbury Road are shown as laid out on Merrett's
Map of 1834.
Nos 34-60, Prestbury Road (qqv) form a group of semi-detached
villas.
