Public house, probably formerly shops, houses and public
house. c1863. Yellow Pease brick with ashlar dressings; Welsh
slate and concrete tiled roof with brick chimneys.
EXTERIOR: 3 storey, 5-window range. Ground-floor pub front
extends along Dundas Street East and returns for one bay into
Cleveland Street.
3 shop-type fronts, partly renewed, the first 2 with entrance
at right and the third with canted corner now window but
probably formerly entrance. Fronts have panelled stall risers
and pilasters, the first 2 with 3 lights, the central narrow
and the third with 2 lights; all lights have arcaded heads.
Pilasters have elaborate heads and support corniced fascias.
separated by moulded brackets with gabled finials. Late C20
etched glass in lower lights of windows.
Upper windows all 4-pane sashes with bracketed projecting
moulded stone sills, and keyed chamfered heads with archivolts
on faceted stops, the first floor heads shallow segments and
the second floor round arches. Dogtooth brick eaves cornice.
Similar cornices and tall yellow pots to ridge chimneys at
left of Nos 3 & 4 Dundas Street East.
Welsh slate roof to Nos 3 & 4 Dundas Street, with C20
skylights inserted; concrete tiled roof to No.5 Dundas Street
and No.2 Cleveland Street; chimney of No.2 Cleveland Street
truncated.
Right return to Cleveland Street has tripartite half-glazed
entrance in fourth bay with overlight and C20 hood, keyed
round vehicle arch at right, and 4-pane sashes to left of door
and on upper floors with projecting stone sills and wedge
stone lintels.
INTERIOR: panelled bar with mirrored shelving behind. Moulded
plasterwork and panelling restored and elaborated late C20.
