Hotel, now flats, with terraces, steps and balustrades in
front. 1861-3 with late C20 alterations. By William Peachey
for the Stockton & Darlington Railway Co. White Pease brick
with ashlar dressings, terracotta balustrades and cast-iron
balconies; roof of Westmorland slate. Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic with 4 storey round tower,
15-window range, arranged 3:3:3:3:3, the 3 at each end canted
bays and the central 3 in the tower. Central double door in
pedimented Tuscan stone surround has entablature continuing
over flanking windows, all with shallow segmental heads, in
tower. End bays project slightly and have canted bay windows
with impost strings and raised keyed segmental heads; similar
treatment to 3 intermediate windows; all windows transomed,
some mullioned.
First floor has arcaded cast-iron balcony, on long iron
brackets, continuing around canted end bay windows with
cornice and blocking course, intermediate lights with
alternate pediments; tower lights with central segmental
pediemnt and flanking straight cornices, all with 2-light
French windows.
Second floor has bracketed sill string to 4-pane sashes with
keyed segmental heads to stone surrounds. Prominent stone
eaves gutter cornice on paired stone brackets. Central tower
rises above this as round turret with iron balcony and has
tall arcaded mullion and transom lights with keyed round heads
and bracketed eaves cornice.
Roof has round headed dormers linked by stone and terracotta
balustrades except where tower rises; tower has conical roof
with rail cresting to top platform and rear covered stair to
platform. Prominent deeply-corniced transverse-ridge chimneys.
Returns in similar style have entrances in projecting rear
bays.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: 2 levels of brick terraces have stone

balustrades with pilasters to piers; central segmental-headed
arch with alternate block surround to double panelled doors is
flanked by entrances with corniced piers from which side steps
rise to central door and to lower terrace.
