House, now 2 houses. c1798-1806 for Charles Higgs; extended
c1830s for Charles Cooke Higgs with later additions and
alterations. Brick with stucco facade and hipped slate roof,
iron verandah. First floor band, cornice and blocking course.
PLAN: road front is a 3-storey extension to the main house and
slightly lower.
EXTERIOR: 3 windows on the second floor: 8/8 between 6/6
sashes. Ground floor: casement window to left, 6/6 sash to
right; flight of roll-edged steps to central entrance a
5-panel door, the lower panel an oval, now part-glazed, with
overlight and in plain reveals, within 2-columnar fluted Doric
porch, frieze and architrave, surmounted (to first floor) by
early C20 glazed verandah balcony; to right are 2 x 6/6 sashes
at stepped levels. All windows in plain reveals and with
sills.
West front: 2 storeys on higher level. First floor: 3 x 6/6
sashes and a blind window, in moulded surrounds and with
cornices on shaped consoles. Ground floor has tented verandah
with iron patterned standards (now mostly glazed in).
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Higgs family (father and son both
Charles) also owned Glenfall House, Mill Lane (qv).
