Anglican church. 1851-2. By A Trimen. Alterations following
fire in 1987 include re-roofing at lower height, removing
original clerestory. Uncoursed rubble with freestone
dressings. C20 roof material. W tower and spire, nave with 2
aisles and transepts, chancel.
EXTERIOR: 3-stage W tower: tall first stage with diagonal
buttresses, and S door with simple hoodmould. Paired lights
with stilted arches to bell chamber, divided by pilaster
carried on corbel head. Quatrefoil frieze below embattled
parapet with corbel table. Corner octagonal stair-turret
capped by spirelet. Spire with lucarnes. Geometric tracery to
2 and 3-light aisle windows. S porch with chamfered arched
doorway now disused, the present entrance in the E elevation
of the porch. Rich geometric tracery to 4-light transept
window, and triple window at low level in W wall. Rose window
in vestry gable projecting from chancel. Angle buttresses to
chancel which has 4-light E window with geometric tracery and
hoodmould over. Vestry to N with canted E end. 2-tier
geometric-traceried window to N transept.
INTERIOR: remodelled after fire damage, but arcade of 4-bays
with octagonal piers and semi-octagonal responds survives.
Stained glass in E window, undated, but late C19, depicting
the conversion of St Paul. Stone-traceried reredos flanked by
scenes from the life of St Paul, in mosaic tiled panels.
