GV II
Farmhouse, now dwelling. Late C17 or early C18, enlarged at an
early date; altered, and renovated late C20. Slobbered rubble
with quoins, stone slate roof. Single-depth main range
probably formerly one unit, on a north-south axis facing west,
extended at south end and now 2 wide units; with a full-height
rear outshut to the north half which projects at the north
end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 4 windows (the 4th very small). The
ground floor has a rebuilt gabled porch offset strongly to the
left, protecting a part-glazed door; an oblong 8-pane sash to
the left, a small square 6-pane sash to the right, and a small
2-light chamfered flush mullion window near the south end. The
upper floor has 3 square 6-pane sashes centred over the porch,
and a small 1-light window above the mullioned window at
ground floor. All the sashed windows appear to have renewed
joinery. Corbelled chimney at north gable, large extruded
chimney stack with offsets at south gable. The north gable
wall has a rectangular extrusion at ground floor (perhaps
formerly a bread-oven). The projected portion of the rear
outshut has a doorway in the front wall and a 2-light
chamfered flush mullion window on each floor of its end wall;
its rear wall has similar 2-light window at 1st floor, and its
south re-entrant has another doorway. The rear of the main
range has a small blocked 1-light window close to the angle
with the outshut, a square 6-pane sash next to this, a small
square 2-light window near the south end and another 6-pane
sash above this.
INTERIOR: thick stone full-height lateral partition wall to
right of doorway; housepart to left has 2 large lateral beams,
that to the left a former smokehood bressumer, with original
bearers, and a large rectangular fireplace with a deep lintel
which has an inscription in cursive script: "I. & J. Capstick
the 29 Day of Augt. 1786"; long room to south apparently
renovated. Outshut contains quarter-turn stone staircase (C20
handrail), and pantries with stone shelves.
HISTORICAL NOTE: probably another example of a former 1-unit
2-storey farmhouse characteristic of this dale in late C17 and
early C18.
Forms group with barn approx. 5m to north-east (qv).
