SO57NW Cow-houses, barn, and stable to
482-1/5/64 east of Meesons Farmhouse

GV II

2 cow-houses, barn and stables. C17 and C18 with c1857
alterations and additions. Timber-frame with brick infill on
rubble plinth and brick infill, weatherboarded timber-frame,
polychrome C19 brick. L-shaped plan of cow-house with hayloft
over forming one wing, and 3-bay barn, weatherboarded
cow-house, and brick stables forming the other.

Cow-house with hayloft: has rubblestone lower level below
timber-framed loft one panel high, with brick infill forming
diamond-pattern vent holes. 3 plain boarded doors each side
with 3 in panelling at loft level.
INTERIOR: 5-bay roof with single trenched purlin and trusses
of cambered tie beam, collar and vertical struts.

Barn: 3-bay former threshing barn with square framing 3 panels
high, 2 lapped straight tension braces per bay with mid C19
brick infill panels set on rubble plinth, brick encased gable
ends, patterned tiled roof. Opposing barn doors with that to
the east covered by C19 brick 2-storey byre/loose box link to
cow-house with hayloft.
INTERIOR: single trenched purlin roof with encased end trusses
of cambered tie beam, twin vertical struts and collar.
Internal trusses of cambered tie beam and twin raking struts,
with long straight tension-braced cross-frames.

Weatherboarded cow-house: links end wall of barn to stables to
south. C19 range with brick to east and boarded to west.
INTERIOR: 4-bay roof of 3 king-post trusses and single purlin.

Stable block: brick stables dated 1857. West front with stable
door each side of central pier flanked by 2-light casement,
all with brick segmental arches with recess. Central
projecting gable with boarded pitching hole. South gable:
plain boarded door with inset inscribed tablet, with date 1857
and initials CHRB, referring to Sir Charles Henry
Rouse-Boughton of Downton Hall (qv).
