No.8
GV II
House in row. Early C17, modified late C20. Rendered rubble,
pantile roof.
PLAN: small 2-room cross-passage plan; ground floor opened to
one space, extensions to rear.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range. 3-light ovolo-moulded
stone-mullioned windows with drip moulds. Ground-floor late
C19 shop window with central doorway. Coped verges, gable
stacks.
INTERIOR: ground floor retains a fine dressed limestone
chamfered 4-centred arched fireplace in rubble walling to left
gable end, and much worn stone spiral staircase. The ceiling
in this half reported as having central chamfered beam
carrying early floor joists, all concealed by late C20
plastered ceiling; a pair of beams said to frame the cross
passage, but neither visible. Rear wall to the right mainly
removed, and upper wall carried on boxed steel joists. The
upper level restructured after fire damage, c1985.
An early survival of interest in this part of the city, the
small casement windows to the upper storey and the steep roof
pitch clearly indicating early provenance.
