Description

12/11/53 No.7
Portway House

GV II

House in row, set back from adjacent properties and slightly
set down from street level. Early C19 with late C19 extension
and alteration to front. Rendered and colourwashed, double
Roman clay tiled roof with abutment to south, plain gable to
north, with ornamental clay tile ridge, brick chimney stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics, 1+3 bays, of which bay 1
projects slightly. Plain sash windows in plain surrounds,
paired at both levels bays 2 and 4. Entrance in bay 3, with
6-panel door having plain architrave and pediment hood on
console brackets. Flat-roofed dormers with 4-pane casements
over bays 2, 3 and 4. A ridge stack between bays 1 and 2
suggests that this bay was a later addition to the original
symmetrical front; there is a further stack to the right
gable.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The house probably built in isolation just outside the limits
of the town, later enclosed by Victorian development.
