GV II

House with shop. c1820-40. Ashlar facade, red brick sides,
roof not visible form ground, brick chimney stack.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 2 bays. Panelled end pilasters, band
course between upper floors, moulded cornice, simple parapet
with raised centre panel. Plain later C20 to ground floor,
with doorway to left, in stone surround with deep fascia under
slim moulding/sill band. Upper floors have sash windows in
plain openings, 15-pane to first floor and 9-pane to second
floor. Additional sash windows in brick wall return to Guard
House Lane.
INTERIOR: ground floor inside modified for shop. Flat above
not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: this was formerly St Christopher's Inn, later
the Somerset Inn; the property ownership extended along Guard
House Lane to South Street at the rear, and included formerly
a stables yard. See also 1/2, South Street (Somerset Cottages)
