Milepost. Early C19. Cast-iron. Triangular on plan, 400mm
across the back, with exposed faces about 310mm, about 1m
high, with raked top. 2 applied side panels with concave
rounded corners and raised lettering, reading on west face
"Bath/19/Miles" and on east "Wells/1/Mile". This was the start
of the Wells to Bath road, turnpiked by the Wells Trust
(1753-1883) in 1753. In 1847 Mr John Kelway was successful in
a tender for "Iron Mile Marks" at ยป1.10s.0d each for the Wells
Trust, and this may be one of these.
