Farmhouse. C17, with C19 alterations. Limestone ashlar and
dressed stone; steeply pitched renewed tile roof with coped
gables and brick end stacks, the shaft to left renewed. 2-unit
plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range with lower 3-window range
to left. Entrance to left of centre has 6-flush-panel door,
recessed-chamfered light to right with leaded glazing; ground
floor has two 3-light casements with leaded glazing under
timber lintels; 1st floor has two 2-light leaded casements
under timber lintels; signs of alteration to window openings,
including internal evidence.
Range to left has dressed stone on ashlar plinth which extends
beyond present return; entrance with plank door in chamfered
opening has window to each floor to left with heavy wood
frames, and 2 windows to right, one originally an entrance,
with 2-light casements.
Right return has later brick external stack obscuring blocked
recessed-chamfered windows with labelmoulds, one with
scratched date: 1703, probably date of blocking.
Rear has dressed stone to 1st floor; blocked central entrance
and flanking 3-light recessed-chamfered-mullioned windows with
labelmoulds, the 1st floor with central single light and
2-light window to right; range to right has entrance with
plank door and 2-light casement to right, and 2-light
mullioned window, 1st floor with 2-light leaded casement.
Former malthouse projects to right end has half-hipped gable
and C19 slate-roofed lean-to outshut to inner return, next to
former 1st floor entrance; 2 tiers of square openings to each
return, some retaining wood frames and a few with catches for
shutters; end has large inserted opening with small opening
above.
INTERIOR: house has some chamfered spine beams, one to room to
left with stop-chamfers to one side, stop-chamfered joists and
large fireplace with cornice and side cupboard; bread oven to
rear; later staircase and partition walls; roughly chamfered
tie beams and principals.
Malthouse has trusses with curved bases; 2nd floor only
remains, with chamfered beams and gypsum covering; end has
furnace and coved brick structure supporting drying floor with
pierced tiles.
HISTORY: a maltster was recorded at the farm until 1870s.
