GV II

Detached house & studio. 1873. By T Batterbury and WF Huxley.
For illustrator Frederick Barnard. Brick with tiled double
pitched roof. 3 storeys and semi-basement. 2 windows. Entrance
on left hand return. Narrow main facade; left hand bay with
gauged brick arches to 2 narrow, vertically set small-paned
windows at ground floor. 1st floor, recessed sash with gauged
brick pointed arch recess above. Gabled right hand bay with
bay window rising through semi-basement and ground floor; 4
mullioned sashes with stuccoed surround and penthouse roof to
ground floor. 1st floor, 4 narrow mullioned sashes with
segmental relieving arch. 2nd floor, similar sashes with
gauged brick pointed arch recess above. Carved bargeboards
with large paired brackets at eaves, shaped to form pointed
arch above window.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached coped brick wall, gate piers
with stone pediments; good wrought-iron gate with scrolled
screen and foliate design.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Barnard was a 'Punch' artist and illustrated
Dickens.
