Detached house & studio. 1875. By T Batterbury and WF Huxley.
For the history & portrait painter, JD Linton. Red brick with
large tiled mansard roof and dormers.
EXTERIOR: 2 main storeys, attic and semi-basement. 4 windows.
To left, round-arched doorway with fanlight and panelled door
approached by 12 steps; flanked by brick pilasters supporting
brick pediment, the plain frieze continuing aground the
building as a band at 1st floor level. To right, large
small-paned window, slightly projecting and with brick
pediment flanked by vertically set narrow small-pane windows
with gauged brick heads. 1st floor with gauged brick flat
arches to recessed sashes with brick aprons; 3 above ground
floor windows and smaller window above entrance pediment.
Deep, stuccoed, coved eaves cornice. 2 large gabled dormers
extending from eaves level into top slope of mansard; single
light above entrance, 2-light with small-paned oculus above
pedimented window; both with window guards of turned wooden
balusters. A further dormer at the top of the mansard. On
return walls a chimney-stack rising through the eaves cornice.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: James Linton, later knighted, was the first
President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
