Crescent of 34 houses, now divided into flats. 1847-1851,
wholly restored 1977.
MATERIALS: stock brick, faced with unusual use of red brick
facing; low-pitched slate roofs behind stucco cornice with
brackets and parapet.
STYLE: represents transition between Regency and simpler
Victorian terraced houses.
PLAN: a long, shallow arc.
EXTERIOR: 22 units of 2 storeys with a semi-basement and 12
units of 3 storeys with a semi-basement, grouped to form end
groups of 3 and a central group of 6; 2 bays each. Narrow
stucco doorcases with panelled pilasters, frieze and cornice
on moulded brackets. Most doors replaced and some now deeply
recessed.
Curved, scalloped lead canopies above 3-light ground-floor
windows with transoms and cast-iron guards. Flat, gauged-brick
arches to 1st- and 2nd-floor sash windows with glazing bars,
projecting sills with cast-iron anthemion pattern guards to
those on 1st-floor centre and end sections.
INTERIOR: some contemporary plasterwork said to remain on some
ceilings inside.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: steps up to doors with wrought-iron hand
rails (mostly replaced).
Unusual to this area for general scale of conception.
