Bank. 1862-3. By Frederic Chancellor. For London and County
Bank. Yellow brick with Portland stone dressings; slate roof.
Mannerist palazzo style. Rectangular plan.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys and attic; 6-window range to east
elevation. Articulated by raised pilasters continued as
pedimented chimney stacks. Dentilled cornice over ground-floor
elevation with panelled double doors and flanking narrow
lights set in keyed segmental-arched marble architrave with
blocked jambs; similar keyed architraves to ground-floor
windows with classical masks to the keystones and blocked
piers. Plate-glass sashes to upper storeys with tripartite
windows to bay on right, set in blocked architraves with
bracketed open pediments, square-headed architraves to
2nd-floor windows with tall keystones touching sills of
3rd-floor windows set in keyed segmental-arched lugged
architraves; plain blocking course beneath modillioned
cornice; pedimented dormer with tripartite window.
Similar 3-bay south elevation and 5-bay west elevation, which
has 2-storey, 2-bay range attached to north.
