Barn, stable, and cartshed in one range on east side of former farmyard; now
garage and workshop, store, and entrance portal. Probably late C18 or early C19.
Timber frames on brick plinths, with weatherboard cladding and red tile roofs.
Linear plan on north-south axis, the barn forming the souhern half, the cartshed
the north end, and the stable between them. The barn is of 3 bays, with opposed
wagon entrances in the centre, that in the west side (facing the farmyard) with
straight angle-braces to the original opening, inserted double doors with a
wooden screen above, and that in the east side now fixed. Continued at the
south end is a 2-bay addition with 2 pairs of double doors and a band of
vertical-paned glazing above. The roof has a half-hip at the north end. The
stable, a low single-storey under a deep roof, has a central stable door with
hand-made strap hinges, and a small wooden-shuttered window on each side. The
cartshed is a 2-bay open-sided structure of the same height as the barn, with
straight angle-braces from the posts to the arcade plates, and a weatherboarded
gable wall. Interiors: mostly softwood frames, but with carpenter's marks; the
barn has curved braces to the tie-beams and queen-strut roof trusses; the stable
has a manger and hayrack. (This range of buildings, forming the boundary
between the farmyard and the road, makes a very striking contribution to the
character of the north end of the village street, and is the principal element of
the group on this site.)
