Description

LEATHERHEAD BRIDGE STREET
TQ 1656 SW (south side)
11/104
Nos. 39 and 41
7.9.51

GV II

House, now shop and office. C17 or earlier, extended to rear and altered in C19
and C20. Probably timber framed, but now all rendered, and some flint visible.
Single-depth 2-bay plan, plus various extensions to the rear. Two-and-a-half
storeys and 2 bays; the ground floor has been altered by the insertion of shop
fronts, that to No.39 (left) modern, with doorway to right, but that to No.41
(right) probably earlier C19, with central doorway and large windows which have
margin panes; the upper floor is jettied (the oversail apparently reduced by the
shop-fronts below), and has a canted bay window in each portion, that on the
right (No.41) sashed with glazing bars but that on the left (No.39) altered as a
casement; a dentilled cornice to the eaves carries round the tops of the
windows. The steeply-pitched half-hipped roof has 2 small hipped dormers with
2-light casements and a chimney stack on the centre of the ridge. Two-stage
additions to the rear, not of special interest.
