II
Formerly known as: Hird Farmhouse ECCUP LANE.
Farmhouse. 1760. For Robert Midgley, steward to the Cookridge
Hall estate. Coursed stone. Plain stone quoins and window
surrounds. Stone slate roof with coped gable ends with
kneelers, shaped stone eaves brackets.
2 storeys with garrets and cellars, 3 windows. 2-light sliding
casements with glazing bars, centre 1st-floor single light.
Small blocked window in each gable. Central door with narrow
overlight. End stacks, stone right, rebuilt in rendered brick
left.
INTERIOR: the entrance is into a narrow hall with segmental
arch to staircase, cellar door right. The stairs rise in
straight flights to the attic storey, the treads are shallow
and turned column balusters support the handrail.
The farm is well documented: the Cookridge Hall records
describe the building of the square, arch-roofed cellar with
stone table and the master mason James Lapish is named as the
man who carved the 16 'corbs' (corbels) for the guttering. An
important survival.
(Cole, D: Rectors, Squires, Stewards... in Adel and Cookridge:
1986-: 33).
