Description

LEEDS

SE2634 KIRKSTALL ROAD
714-1/27/933 (South side (off))
23/03/93 Weir on River Aire at NGR 2655 3488
(Formerly Listed as:
KIRKSTALL ROAD, Burley
(South side)
Weir on River Aire)

GV II

Weir. Early C19. Gritstone. Approx 35m wide and 3m high. Bowed
in plan, of graded slabs; flanking walls edge-tooled, the NE
wall forming a revetment to the bank of the confluence of the
Abbey and St Anne's Mills tail race with the river.
The weir is part of a major development of the river and
millrace, probably to increase the volume of water at Burley
Mills (qv). The weir creates a head of water which is also
controlled by the ford/weir further upstream (qv), this
stretch of the river probably straightened at the same time.
