5/94 Barn immediately SW of
Church Farmhouse
II
Barn. Probably C17, partly rebuilt and extended in C18. Timber-framed
with brick infilling and partly rendered, partly rebuilt and extended in
Flemish and English bond red brick. Red clay pantile roof with gabled
ends.
Rectangular plan 5-bay barn with opposed cart entrances to central
threshing bay. In C18 the barn was largely rebuilt in brick (except for
second bay from east end), the roof was replaced and outshuts were added
at the rear north and at the front of the east end.
South front has large plank double doors at centre; bay to right has
exposed timber frame with brick infill and to right of that the main
roof is carried down as catslide over brick outshut. At rear (north)
the roof is similarly carried down over brick outshuts.
Interior: Bay to east of centre has timber frame front and back walls
with exposed straight tension braces, studding, jowled storey posts and
plaster infil. The roof has tie-beams with curved braces; the C18 roof
above has collars, one with queen-posts and principals with tenoned
purlins.
Note: This is a rare surviving example for North Norfolk of a timber-
framed barn.
