12/29 Forecourt retaining wall
- approx. 70 metres to
south-west of Loton Park
GV II
Forecourt retaining wall. Circa 1840. Roughly coursed red sandstone rubble
base; red sandstone ashlar parapet and piers. Approximately 40 metres
long with each end canted back; Tudor Gothic style. Parapets to angled
pieces at each end only with chamfered plinths and copings, square inner
end piers with cinquefoil-panelled urn finials, and ramps up to square
gate piers at outer ends with trefoil-panelled sides and gabled tops.
Ha-ha to south-west. Thomas Jones of Chester carried out work at Loton
Park (qv) in c.1830 and c.1838 and might also be responsible for the
retaining wall which forms the fourth side of the forecourt to the
house. Included for group value.
